On Long Island, Linda Mancuso describes her daily prayers centering on whether her son\u2019s caregiver, Jean, can return to work. Jean, who held a temporary permit, was laid off in late July from a nonprofit supporting individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. For Mancuso\u2019s 23-year-old son, Michael, who is nonverbal and requires assistance with fundamental tasks such as eating, showering, and dressing, Jean served as a critical support system.<\/p>\n
“Certain people just have it,” Mancuso said of Jean. “He’s literally a lifeline.” She recalled the distress of previously sending Michael to residential care at age 19 but found peace upon his pairing with Jean. Now, with the layoff, that stability has vanished alongside 18 other Haitian staff members.<\/p>\n
The healthcare sector has been particularly severely impacted by the workforce disruption. Haiti ranks among the top five countries of origin for immigrants in the direct-care field, according to Kezia Scales, vice-president of policy and research at the Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute. She noted that the industry was already suffering from staffing shortages and long waitlists for services ranging from home health aides to assisted living.<\/p>\n
“We simply do not have enough people in our domestic market, when you exclude immigrants, to fill those jobs,” Scales told the BBC. National advocacy groups are now pushing for policies that expand legal pathways for international caregivers to mitigate the crisis.<\/p>\n
The termination of TPS aligns with broader immigration restrictions championed by President Donald Trump during his 2024 re-election campaign. More than a dozen countries have seen their TPS designation ended during his second term, with Haitians constituting nearly one-third of those affected. In Long Island, both counties strongly supported Trump in the recent election.<\/p>\n
In response to criticisms regarding the impact on healthcare, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson stated that TPS is inherently temporary.
