On the fourth and final day of his pilgrimage to France, Pope Leo XIV delivered a powerful message calling for peace and unity across Europe. Speaking in the northeastern city of Metz on Monday, the Pope encouraged the continent to reflect on its Christian heritage as a foundation for moral renewal.
Addressing the growing fragmentation in global and interpersonal relations, Leo XIV offered a sharp critique of contemporary political and social conduct. “Relations between individuals and states are becoming increasingly uncivilised,” he stated. “The value of keeping one’s word is dismissed. Instead, people boast of lies and deceit.”
The Pope argued that Europe possesses a unique capacity to counter this trend. He suggested that the continent could help break the cycle of dishonesty by leaning into the respect for others that it has historically cultivated and preserved.
