UK Police Investigate Potential Foiled Iran-Linked Attack Near US Air Base

British counterterrorism police are investigating whether the detention of five individuals near a US-operated air base prevented an attack connected to Iran. Authorities have discovered suspected explosive devices in the vicinity of RAF Fairford in England, where the suspects were taken into custody on Sunday morning.

The arrests occurred after police received a late-night report regarding suspicious vehicles near the base. While President Donald Trump stated that the detainees had been under surveillance through US-UK cooperation, local police indicated the operation was triggered by the specific sighting of the vans.

Five men remain in custody, having initially been held on suspicion of explosives offenses before being arrested on charges related to preparing acts of terrorism. Under current regulations, police can detain the suspects for up to 14 days before deciding whether to charge them or release them.

The incident has caused significant disruption in the nearby village of Whelford. Approximately 85 residents were evacuated from their homes on Sunday, and as of Monday morning, they had not yet been permitted to return. Army bomb-disposal experts utilized a robot to examine three white vans, which remain at the scene.

RAF Fairford, located roughly 100 miles west of London, has a long history of hosting American bombers during various Middle Eastern conflicts. During the recent conflict involving Iran, US B-1 and B-52 bombers have launched operations from the base. Iran has previously stated that it considers any airfield used to attack its territory to be a legitimate target.

British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting declined to provide operational details but praised the collaboration between British and American services. He told Times Radio that officials would provide updates to the public regarding the nature of the threat as more information becomes available.

Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband described the event as a stark reminder of the security challenges facing the country. The arrests come amid heightened tensions, with British intelligence noting a 50% increase in national security cases involving hostile states, including Iran, in the six months leading up to December 2025.

Although the UK did not join the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran that began in late February, Prime Minister Keir Starmer agreed in March to allow the use of British bases for defensive operations against Iranian missile threats. Security officials continue to warn that Iranian proxies may expand their targeting within the UK if regional conflicts persist.
