Westminster Council Weighs Future of Banksy’s Waterloo Place Statue

Westminster City Council has announced it is reviewing all possible long-term solutions for Banksy’s controversial sculpture, titled Blinded by the Flag, currently displayed in central London. The artwork was installed on a plinth at Waterloo Place on 29 April.

A council spokesperson confirmed that discussions took place over the summer but stated that no formal decision regarding the piece’s future has been reached yet. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the matter is expected to be addressed at a forthcoming cabinet meeting.

The council described itself as the custodian of the statue, noting that it has maintained contact with the street artist’s representatives. While Banksy retains the copyright to the work, the local authority is responsible for the expenses associated with securing and maintaining the installation.

Financial disclosures made in August revealed that the council had incurred nearly £60,000 in costs related to the artwork. These expenses covered safety barriers, administrative fees, and a dedicated security guard tasked with monitoring the piece.

Located near the Florence Nightingale statue and the Crimean War Memorial just off the Mall, the sculpture depicts a man in a suit marching away from his plinth while his face is obscured by a flag. The piece has been interpreted by critics as a commentary on the dangers of uncritical loyalty to national symbols.

Although the artwork itself has remained largely intact, its base has been marked with spray-painted graffiti. The council did not specify which potential outcomes are currently under consideration for the statue’s placement or preservation.
