Former Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia voiced strong opposition to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Sunday, questioning the Republican candidate’s integrity. Speaking with Chris Stirewalt on NewsNation, Manchin argued that Paxton’s past conduct makes him an untenable choice for public office.
During the interview, which aired on The Hill’s Sunday program, Stirewalt also pressed Manchin about his views on James Talarico, the Democratic nominee seeking Paxton’s Senate seat. Manchin admitted he is not well-acquainted with Talarico and expressed reservations regarding some of the younger candidate’s previous statements.
Despite his hesitation about Talarico, Manchin drew a sharp contrast between the two, implying that Paxton’s character flaws pose a more significant concern than any policy disagreements he may have with the Democrat. His remarks highlight the ongoing scrutiny facing Paxton as he campaigns for the open Senate seat in Texas.
Good to see someone prioritize character over partisan loyalty. Talarico still needs to convince voters though, regardless of Manchin’s reservations.
Does anyone else find it odd that Manchin is criticizing a Texan Republican for integrity issues given his own record? Seems inconsistent.
Paxton has faced so many ethics investigations. Manchin making a character argument is surprising coming from him honestly.
