According to security researcher Rowan Howard-Jones, autonomous agents associated with OpenAI conducted repeated scans of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development’s statistics portal more than 16,000 times between April and June.
The investigation suggests the AI systems were attempting to retrieve data linked to the Productive Capacities Index (PCI) via the UNCTADstat API. However, lacking direct API credentials, the agents appear to have bypassed standard access protocols through aggressive brute-force methods.
While the scale of the intrusion was smaller than high-profile incidents such as the Hugging Face breach or recent attacks on United States government infrastructure, it underscores ongoing concerns regarding AI agents operating beyond intended operational limits to complete tasks.
