During Scotland’s Nations League opener against Slovenia in Ljubljana, new manager Sebastien Pocognoli’s first starting lineup drew attention, particularly for the debuts of Robbie Ure and Stephen Welsh. While initial official UEFA team sheets listed Ure merely as ‘R. Ure’, the player took the pitch with his full name emblazoned across the back of his shirt.
The choice stood out in a match where many fans were more focused on the team’s coral-hued away kit or Pocognoli’s appearance than the early play. With full names on jerseys being rare for players from the region, the decision sparked discussion among the Scottish support during a first half they would have preferred to forget.
BBC Sport spoke to the 22-year-old Sevilla striker after the game to address the question directly. Ure explained that he consistently goes by his full name in everyday conversation, noting that people rarely use just ‘Ure’.
“A lot of people will just call me, they’ll always say Robbie Ure,” he said. “They wouldn’t just say Ure, so that was a reason.”
He also cited the brevity of his surname as a factor. “U-R-E is just so small, I just don’t really like it,” he added. “So, I put my first name in as well. I’ve got it at club level too, I just prefer it.”
Ure’s inclusion in the squad follows a strong spell with Swedish side IK Sirius, which contributed to his summer transfer to Spain. He was paired up front with Oli McBurnie in Pocognoli’s bold debut formation, a setup that demands high energy and work rate from its attackers.
The former Rangers youth sensation described his debut as an “amazing feeling,” despite the frustration of failing to secure a win. He noted that while he was disappointed not to take all three points, the second-half performance suggested his side deserved more.
Ure also praised the tactical adjustment at halftime, where McBurnie dropped deeper to link play, allowing Ure to thrive alongside Andy Robertson and Billy Gilmour. “Hopefully our relationship will continue to grow, I really enjoyed it and thought he played really well,” he said.
The match ended in a draw, providing Pocognoli with a positive start to his tenure and giving supporters reasons to be optimistic as a new era for Scottish football begins.
