Authorities in England conducted evacuations and made several arrests on Sunday near a military air base utilized by United States forces, following suspicions of explosives-related offenses.
Gloucestershire Police confirmed that residents from multiple properties in Whelford, located in western England, were relocated to a nearby leisure center. Officials stated that the situation has been brought under control.
Counter-terrorism units have taken the lead on the investigation, a standard procedure for incidents of this nature. Whelford is situated close to RAF Fairford, a strategic asset that American troops have employed for limited strikes during the ongoing conflict with Iran. Since the commencement of the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran on February 28, the British government has permitted the US military to launch attacks on Iranian missile sites from the Fairford facility.
Police reported that several men were held on suspicion of violating the Explosives Act, while army bomb-disposal specialists inspected various vehicles. Law enforcement declined to explicitly link the arrests to the air base.
“A cordon is currently in place, but we’d like to reassure people that we believe this incident is contained,” the police force said in a statement.
Defense Secretary Wes Streeting commended the emergency responders and specialist teams for their efforts. “We can be reassured that this is being dealt with,” he stated.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s office indicated that he is receiving regular updates regarding the developing situation.
A spokesperson for the US Air Force noted that personnel stationed at RAF Fairford remain vigilant but refused to disclose specific force protection details for security reasons. “We constantly assess a variety of factors that determine what measures we institute or modify to protect our installations, our people and their families,” the spokesperson said.
