UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has announced plans to establish a national care service that would be free at the point of use, aiming to address what he described as the threadbare state of social care in England. During an interview with the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg, Burnham emphasized the critical link between the two systems, stating plainly, “broken social care will in the end break the NHS,” and affirming his intention not to look away from the crisis.
Burnham outlined that a detailed strategy for the new national care service would be developed and subsequently presented to the public during the next general election campaign.
Chris Philp, the Shadow Home Secretary, responded to the proposal by cautioning that funding the scheme would likely necessitate further tax increases. He characterized higher taxation as a “red line” for the Conservative Party.
