Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Bill Gates has urged US federal lawmakers and law enforcement agencies to implement strict regulations on the development of artificial intelligence. Speaking during an interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker that aired on Sunday, Gates cautioned that leaving the technology unchecked could lead to catastrophic consequences, including the loss of a billion lives.
“You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like,” Gates told Welker, the host of NBC’s Meet the Press. He emphasized that relying on industry self-regulation is insufficient, stating, “no one thinks self-regulation is enough.” According to Gates, government intervention must become a mandatory component of the AI safety conversation.
