A spokesperson confirmed that properties in the Whelford area, a village adjacent to the base, are being cleared while the Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team inspects several vehicles.
The security posture at the base has intensified following authorization from the British government for the US to conduct strikes on Iranian missile sites targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Reuters reported that armed officers were seen blocking the main entrance to the facility.
A representative for the US Air Force declined to elaborate on specific force protection measures but stated that the 501st Combat Support Wing remains vigilant. The spokesperson emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety of service members, civilians, contractors, and their families at the installation.
Tensions in the region have prompted heightened defenses across the UK. In July, British ministers declared that armed forces were prepared to defend the country after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned against allowing US bombers to operate from Fairford.
