27 Killed in Two Separate Mass Shootings Across South Africa

Two separate mass shootings in South Africa over a weekend have left 27 people dead, underscoring the nation’s ongoing struggle with extreme levels of gun violence. The attacks occurred hours apart in two of the country’s largest cities: Johannesburg and Cape Town.

In the Johannesburg incident on Saturday evening, eight armed men stormed a bar located near the city. According to police, the gunmen opened fire on patrons outside before moving inside. Before fleeing, they set fire to two vehicles. The attack resulted in 17 deaths, comprising 13 men and four women, and left 15 others injured. Authorities stated that the motive for this assault remains unclear.

Hours later, in the early hours of Sunday morning, a second shooting took place outside an entertainment venue in a township near Cape Town. This attack killed 10 people, with five dying at the scene and five succumbing to their injuries in hospitals. Eleven additional people were wounded. As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made in connection with either incident.

These killings follow a pattern of escalating violence across the country. Just days prior, gunmen killed 11 people inside a home in the KwaMakhutha township in Durban. South Africa currently records approximately 60 murders daily, ranking among the highest murder rates globally. Much of this violence is driven by turf wars between criminal gangs involved in drug trafficking and illegal mining operations.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously identified organized crime as the most immediate threat to the country’s democracy and economic stability. In response to rising armed violence, the government deployed the military alongside police earlier this year to assist in areas with the highest crime rates. Illegal weapons remain widely available, fueling the persistent security crisis.
