Online discourse at the University of St Andrews has intensified following revelations of class-based tensions between economically disadvantaged local students and affluent undergraduates from the United States. The controversy gained significant traction after Sophie Rose Jenkins, a former student of comparative literature and classical studies, announced she would not be returning for the upcoming academic year.
Jenkins cited her personal experiences with classism on campus as the primary reason for her departure. She published a detailed account of her situation on LinkedIn, initially expecting little attention. However, within two weeks, the post garnered responses from hundreds of individuals who related to her experiences.
In her writing, Jenkins highlighted that working-class students often feel compelled to hide their backgrounds and endure shame regarding their home lives while at the institution. At the time of her attendance, St Andrews was ranked as the top university in the United Kingdom, a distinction that contrasted sharply with the social barriers described by former students from lower-income families.
