Alcaraz survives match points to put Europe ahead in Laver Cup

Carlos Alcaraz ensured Team Europe maintained their advantage in the Laver Cup by surviving two match points in a thrilling three-set victory over American Taylor Fritz. The win, concluded 6-3 4-6 13-11 at London’s O2 Arena, lifts Europe to a 7-5 lead heading into the final day of competition.

The two-time Wimbledon champion narrowly avoided back-to-back singles losses for the first time in 18 months. This marks Alcaraz’s first singles appearance since his late-night quarter-final exit against Ben Shelton at the US Open.

Alcaraz demonstrated resilience in the deciding tie-break, facing match points at 8-9 down. He fired an ace to keep his hopes alive and used a signature drop shot to neutralize the second match point. He ultimately converted his opportunity when Fritz failed to return another delicate touch.

“The drop shot is part of my game,” Alcaraz said after securing the win. “In those really close and important moments, I tried to use it because it was a really good weapon for me in this match.”

Although American Fritz minimized errors and secured his only previous victory against the Spaniard during last year’s tournament, he was unable to match Alcaraz’s offensive output. The world number three struck 42 winners compared to Fritz’s 20, prompting cheers from an audience featuring tennis legends Roger Federer and Andy Murray.

Earlier in the day, Andre Agassi’s Team World appeared poised to take control. Alex de Minaur rallied from a set deficit to defeat Alexander Zverev 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 11-9, and debutant Learner Tien edged out Italy’s Flavio Cobolli 6-3 2-6 10-7.

However, the momentum shifted after Alcaraz’s singles heroics. Zverev partnered with Casper Ruud to claim a crucial doubles victory over Alexander Bublik and Brandon Nakashima 6-4 7-6 (9-7), ensuring Europe remains ahead.

The final day will feature singles matches worth three points each, with the first team to reach 13 points claimed the trophy. Europe is chasing its sixth Laver Cup title, while defending champions Team World are looking to secure their third.
