BBC Radio 2 presenter Owain Wyn Evans is preparing for the charity’s most extensive cycling fundraiser yet, covering nearly 400 miles across the United Kingdom. The Welsh host of the Early Breakfast Show will ride through all four UK nations, beginning in Glasgow and concluding in Cardiff.
The five-day physical challenge is scheduled to take place from Monday, 9 November to Friday, 13 November, culminating on the same day the BBC’s flagship telethon, Children in Need, is broadcast. According to the BBC, this undertaking represents the greatest distance ever covered by a Radio 2 presenter for the organization.
Evans, who hails from Ammanford in Carmarthenshire, acknowledged the magnitude of the task ahead. “When I said yes to this challenge, I knew it would push me well outside my comfort zone,” he said. “It’s going to be tough, demanding and probably a little daunting at times, but I’m ready to give it absolutely everything I’ve got.”
The broadcaster also expressed admiration for his colleagues, noting that previous participants such as Sara Cox, Paddy McGuinness, and Vernon Kay had achieved “extraordinary things” for the cause. “I’ve got a lot to live up to,” Evans admitted.
Professional support will be provided by sports scientist Professor Greg Whyte throughout the journey. Whyte previously assisted Sara Cox during her 135-mile jog, walk, and run through Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire, and West Yorkshire.
Helen Thomas, boss of BBC Radio 2, thanked Evans for accepting the role, stating: “Thank you to Owain for picking up the Pudsey backpack baton from Sara on behalf of the many thousands of children who will benefit.”
Evans joins fellow Welsh presenter Alex Jones, host of The One Show, as part of the announced presenting team for the 2026 Children in Need broadcast.
Paddy McGuinness did a tough ride recently. I wonder if Owain will have to push as hard for the record?
Does anyone know what the actual route looks like? Glasgow to Cardiff in five days seems absolutely brutal.
That is an incredible distance! Nearly 400 miles in five days is serious endurance. Go Owain!
