As the 2026 Oktoberfest reaches its midpoint, Munich city officials and festival organizers are discussing the possibility of shutting down the Theresienwiese grounds prematurely. Authorities have expressed serious concerns regarding increasing rowsiness among visitors, which could force a closure before the festival concludes on October 3.
The potential shutdown comes just days after this year’s event opened under a cloud of similar fears. In late September, police intervened against unruly crowds in previous years, leading to a historic early closure during the final weekend of the 2025 festival after a night marked by arson attacks and widespread disorder. Organizers have emphasized that maintaining safety is their priority and have stated they do not wish to repeat those disruptions.
For decades, the Oktoberfest has drawn millions of tourists annually. However, issues stemming from intoxicated visitors have gained significant public attention since New Year’s Eve 2024/2025, when violent clashes between revelers and law enforcement were broadcast globally.
Despite the turbulent history of recent years, the event remains a vital economic driver for Bavaria. The festival currently generates approximately €1 billion in revenue for the city, underscoring its importance to the local economy even as public safety remains a pressing concern.
