Russia Expected to Escalate Hybrid Warfare Against Europe

In the wake of a dramatic surge in unauthorized airspace intrusions and sabotage acts, officials across Europe are preparing for an intensified hybrid war campaign by Russia. While incidents such as Russian drones penetrating the airspace of Poland and Romania were previously met with diplomatic caution, the tone has shifted sharply following a series of incursions and crashes this summer.

For nations sharing borders with Ukraine, including the Baltic states, Poland, Moldova, and Romania, the conflict is no longer viewed through the lens of ambiguous “hybrid” tactics. Instead, politicians in these countries assert that Moscow is acting with deliberate intent. Recent data highlights the escalation: Moldova reported four drones entering its airspace, two of which detonated on the ground, while Romania confirmed two violations, including a crash near Solca. Poland faced similar pressures, with NATO fighter jets scrambled twice and a Russian Mi-8 helicopter hovering in its airspace for 42 seconds.

Tensions rose further on Wednesday night when a fire broke out at a Starlink ground station near Wola Krobowska, approximately 40 kilometers south of Warsaw. Polish authorities evacuated two nearby border crossings and characterized the blaze as a likely act of sabotage. This follows warnings from Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who stated in Krakow that Russia is refining its methods of pressure. Tusk alleged that President Vladimir Putin aims to exhaust both Ukraine’s infrastructure and Europe’s resilience.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu echoed these concerns, declaring that Russia’s war poses a direct threat to the entire continent and reaffirming her nation’s support for Kyiv. Reactions in Romania have been more measured; Defense Minister Radu Miruta suggested a diplomatic protest sufficed, though he noted the crashed drone in Solca featured advanced technical characteristics. However, President Nicusor Dan emphasized at the UN General Assembly in New York that Romania, as the EU member with the longest border with Ukraine, directly feels the consequences of the aggression.

Beyond Eastern Europe, speculation is mounting regarding attacks on Western nations. The Spanish daily El Mundo recently published a CIA report indicating Russia may be preparing drone strikes on Italy, France, and Spain, potentially launched from international waters in the Mediterranean using vessels linked to Russia’s shadow fleet. French President Emmanuel Macron admitted he was not formally warned by U.S. intelligence but acknowledged the possibility of such an attack was “plausible.”

During a security conference in Denmark, defense minister Jeppe Bruus and other military officials described the current climate as the most severe since the conclusion of the Cold War. They cautioned that Russia is expected to ramp up its hybrid warfare operations against NATO and Western allies in the coming months, necessitating heightened preparedness across the continent.
