A new review into youth employment is set to recommend that young people with severe, lifelong disabilities should receive fast-tracked access to disability benefits. The proposal, led by former Labour health secretary Alan Milburn, argues that 16- to 24-year-olds with complex needs should be guaranteed swift and unconditional support.
Under the suggested changes, these individuals would no longer be required to undergo processes proving they are unable to work. Instead, they would bypass standard assessments due to the low prospect of paid employment associated with their conditions.
Swift support is vital, but we need clear criteria. Without them, how do we define ‘severe and lifelong’ accurately?
But what about those with less obvious disabilities? Will they still be stuck in the same endless assessment loop?
My son waited two years for his PIP assessment. If this helps kids like him, I’m all for it.
Is this funding coming from somewhere else? I worry about the long-term economic impact on the welfare system.
Finally, a sensible approach. Forcing severely disabled youth through invasive assessments is cruel and counterproductive.
