The long-standing rivalry between India and Pakistan was laid bare at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, with both nations using the global platform to trade sharp accusations regarding territorial disputes and security concerns.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the assembly, calling for a “just and fair resolution of the Kashmir dispute” and alleging that human rights violations are occurring in the region. He also accused New Delhi of “weaponizing” water by holding the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance, a move he claimed lacked legal basis.
Sharif further referenced the military clashes that occurred between the neighbors last year. Pakistan views the Indian missile strikes on May 7 as the start of an unprovoked conflict, describing them as “external aggression from India under a false pretext.” India maintains that the strikes were a direct retaliation for an attack carried out by gunmen in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in April of the previous year.
New Delhi firmly rejected Sharif’s assertions. Petal Gahlot, First Secretary at India’s UN mission, accused Islamabad of practicing “terrorism, deceit and duplicity.” She warned that Pakistan’s support for cross-border terrorism would have significant consequences and criticized the Pakistani military establishment for its treatment of minorities. Gahlot reiterated India’s stance that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of the country.
The diplomatic exchange highlights the deep-seated grievances between the two nuclear-armed neighbors, which continue to dominate their bilateral relations despite periodic attempts at dialogue.
This rhetoric goes in circles every year. I doubt anything practical will come from these mutual accusations at the assembly.
Does anyone else find it ironic that Pakistan accuses India of water weaponization while they control the upper reaches of the rivers?
India’s position on terrorism is clear and justified. Pakistan needs to stop exporting violence and focus on its own development.
It is worrying to see nuclear neighbors using the UN as a battleground instead of a place for dialogue.
