TikTok has reached a settlement with the state of Alabama, agreeing to pay at least $100 million and impose new restrictions on teenage users, thereby avoiding a scheduled trial. The agreement was reportedly modeled on the recent deal struck between Instagram owner Meta and multiple U.S. states.
The lawsuit had been set to begin on Monday, centering on allegations that TikTok deceived parents regarding the effectiveness of tools designed to protect children from harmful content online. By resolving the matter through settlement, the company sidesteps a courtroom verdict that could have set a broader legal precedent.
State officials in Alabama characterized the arrangement as a “first-in-the-nation settlement” within the context of extensive litigation concerning the impact of social media on adolescent mental health and wellbeing. The deal includes mandatory time limits and other safeguards for minor accounts, reflecting growing regulatory pressure on tech platforms to address youth safety concerns.
