In the most fiercely contested districts for the 2026 midterm elections, sitting members of Congress possess a decisive financial advantage over their challengers, according to new campaign finance data. While the political landscape in several key races remains deadlocked, cash-on-hand figures suggest that incumbents are better positioned to weather the final stretch of the campaign.
An analysis by CNBC of the 19 House races rated as “toss-ups” by The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter found that in 11 of the incumbent-versus-challenger matchups, one candidate held at least double the available funds of the other. In every single one of those instances, the sitting representative led the challenger.
The financial gap is particularly stark in districts where Republicans are defending their seats, a group that constitutes the majority of the battlefield. Among the most significant disparities are Michigan’s 7th District, Colorado’s 8th District, and California’s 22nd District.
In Michigan’s 7th District, Republican Rep. Tom Barrett reported approximately $2.9 million in cash on hand, compared to just $383,000 for his Democratic challenger, William Lawrence—a ratio exceeding 7-to-1. Similarly, in Colorado’s 8th District, Republican Rep. Gabe Evans held around $3.9 million, substantially outpacing his opponent’s reserves.
While six challengers across the analyzed races did manage to outraise their incumbent opponents in terms of available cash, none were able to secure a 2-to-1 advantage. This underscores the depth of the incumbents’ financial cushions in the race for chamber control.
The data, drawn from the latest uniform quarterly reports covering activity through June 30 and compiled by the nonpartisan nonprofit OpenSecrets, highlights a persistent trend in modern elections: the structural benefit incumbents enjoy in fundraising, even in races where polling indicates a highly competitive political environment.
