Supreme Court Revives Controversial Database for Voter Citizenship Checks

The US Supreme Court has removed restrictions on the Trump administration’s use of a contentious federal database designed to verify voter citizenship and filter out alleged non-citizens from electoral rolls. The decision represents a significant legal victory for the administration as it intensifies its efforts to address concerns over voter fraud.

The program in question is known as Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements, or SAVE. Originally established in 1986, the database was intended to help officials confirm the immigration status of individuals applying for public benefits. However, the Trump administration expanded its capabilities last year, permitting bulk searches utilizing social security numbers to check the eligibility of voters.

In June, a federal judge issued an injunction against the revamped system, ruling that it violated Americans’ privacy rights. US District Judge Sparkle L Soonnan, a appointee of President Biden, stated that the federal government was “knowingly trampling on the privacy rights” of citizens in a way that threatened the fundamental right to vote. A subsequent federal appeals court allowed that ruling to remain in effect until the Supreme Court intervened on Friday.

The high court’s decision was divided along ideological lines. The six conservative justices supported the administration’s use of the database, while the three liberal-leaning justices dissented. Critics of the ruling have warned that the aggressive verification process could result in valid, registered voters being erroneously removed from election rolls.
