Prime Minister Andy Burnham has stated that he has no intention of calling an early general election, describing such a move as a “backward-looking process” while he heads to his first Labour Party conference as PM this weekend.
In interviews with BBC regional political editors, Burnham dismissed speculation that a snap vote could be held as soon as next May. He emphasized that his priority remains assisting citizens with the cost of living and supporting businesses, rather than returning the country to an election cycle.
Although recent polling indicates that Labour’s standing has improved since Burnham replaced Sir Keir Starmer in July 2025, the party is still closely trailed by Reform UK and the Conservatives. Projections suggest Labour would lose its parliamentary majority in a snap election, though it would likely remain the largest party. The next general election is constitutionally required by August 2029.
Burnham said he intends to use the conference, taking place in Liverpool, to outline the future direction for the country and foster hope among the public, rejecting the notion of using a premature vote to secure a personal mandate or distance himself from the commitments made in the 2024 Labour manifesto.
