Chancellor John Healey has recruited Ravinder Athwal, the economist responsible for drafting the Labour Party’s 2024 general election manifesto, to serve as a senior adviser. The appointment is expected to intensify political speculation regarding the timing of an early general election.
Athwal, formerly part of Keir Starmer’s team, joins the Chancellor’s office from Flint Global Business Live. The recruitment comes as Healey seeks to strengthen his economic team prior to the upcoming budget scheduled for 28 October.
The timing of the hire coincides with significant economic headwinds, including elevated oil prices and increasing government borrowing costs, which are currently pressuring the national economy.
