Lightspeed Aims for $250 Million in New India AI Fund

Silicon Valley venture capital firm Lightspeed is intensifying its focus on artificial intelligence within India, targeting $250 million for a new early-stage fund. The move underscores the firm’s conviction that AI will spark the next generation of startups in one of the world’s most significant tech markets.

Known for substantial investments in AI leaders such as Anthropic, xAI, and Databricks globally, Lightspeed has also backed Sarvam AI in India. Sarvam is a prominent large language model developer and was chosen by the Indian government to assist in creating sovereign AI models.

The upcoming vehicle, Lightspeed India Partners V, will be half the size of its predecessor, which raised $500 million in 2022. That previous fund has already deployed 80% of its capital. Although Lightspeed disclosed the new fund in a U.S. regulatory filing in late April without specifying the target amount, Indian media had previously reported a fundraising goal between $300 million and $350 million.

According to an investor letter seen by TechCrunch, the firm plans to begin investing from the new fund within two months, operating under a roughly 2.5-year investment period. In the interim, Lightspeed will finalize commitments using the existing fund. A spokesperson for the firm declined to provide further comment.

This launch marks a strategic shift as Lightspeed aligns its India fundraising cycle with its global funds for the first time, bringing the regional operation established nearly two decades ago into closer harmony with the rest of the firm. The move mirrors a similar coordinated effort by rival Accel, which raised four funds simultaneously in August as part of a $3.5 billion global push.

Lightspeed indicated that the smaller $250 million target reflects its current investment pace and the shortened timeframe, allowing the firm to concentrate on individual deals rather than fund size. This approach may also enable Lightspeed to raise its subsequent fund sooner.

The new fund’s thesis posits that AI has the potential to generate more value in India than the internet did. Consequently, the vehicle will seek AI opportunities across India and Southeast Asia, representing a sharper thematic focus for the firm. While Lightspeed’s India portfolio has historically spanned quick commerce, consumer internet, software, and household services—with investments in companies like Zepto, Pocket FM, and SolarSquare—the new fund is dedicated entirely to AI.

India currently lacks a major global frontier AI model developer and has received significantly less AI investment than the United States or China. However, investors see potential at the application layer, leveraging the country’s extensive pool of software developers and long history as a technology services hub.

The $250 million commitment is a fraction of Lightspeed’s broader resources. The firm manages over $65 billion in assets globally and raised $9 billion across multiple funds last December, including a $980 million early-stage venture fund. To date, Lightspeed’s dedicated India and Southeast Asia funds have deployed approximately $900 million, while global funds have contributed an additional $1.6 billion to the region.

The same team responsible for Lightspeed’s previous four India funds will manage the new vehicle.

3 responses to “Lightspeed Aims for $250 Million in New India AI Fund”

  1. India needs its own frontier models, not just apps. When will VCs stop treating us merely as a developer hub for global AI?

  2. Wait, half the size of the previous fund? That’s a surprising pivot for such an aggressive firm. Do they expect slower deployment?

  3. Great to see Lightspeed doubling down on Indian AI. The application layer opportunity here is massive and long overdue for serious capital.
