President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are scheduled to meet with executives from major technology companies next week to discuss the future of artificial intelligence, according to sources familiar with the plans.
The gathering, set for Tuesday, September 29, arrives amid heightened concerns from some of the nation’s leading AI firms. Executives from companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic have recently issued urgent warnings about the risks posed by rapidly advancing AI technologies, calling for measures to slow development before systems potentially surpass human intelligence.
However, the upcoming dialogue stands in contrast to Trump’s long-standing skepticism regarding AI dangers. The president has previously characterized fears about the technology as a “hoax” and rejected calls for new regulations. Last week, he reiterated these views on social media, stating that narratives about AI taking over the world or destroying humanity were part of a “sick conspiracy.”
Despite his previous dismissals, Trump indicated earlier this month that he intended to establish a new “AI Force” and appoint a dedicated AI czar. Meanwhile, Speaker Johnson has expressed support for the proposed meeting, emphasizing the need to address the responsibilities of tech companies regarding safety protocols.
“There’ll be a deliberate discussion about the responsibility of the companies to maintain safety, and what role, if any, the government has to play in that,” Johnson told reporters last week.
The House of Representatives has largely adjourned for the summer recess until after the midterm elections, limiting legislative activity on AI regulation during this period.
