Microsoft appears to be phasing out its “Copilot Plus PC” branding, a move that follows the initiative’s launch roughly two and a half years ago. Originally promoted as a designation for devices with sufficient on-device AI capabilities, the brand seems to have been quietly discontinued by both Microsoft and Qualcomm.
According to reports from Windows Central’s Zac Bowden, the recently released 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop satisfy the technical specifications required for the Copilot Plus classification. However, Microsoft is no longer using the label to market these machines.
Brett Ostrom, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Surface, confirmed the change directly to the publication. “These are not called Copilot Plus PCs,” Ostrom stated, indicating a deliberate departure from the previous naming convention. The comments from Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President Kedar Kondap have also contributed to the understanding that the specific branding is being retired.
The decision marks a significant pivot for a feature Microsoft previously emphasized as a key differentiator for its hardware lineup, suggesting the company may be reevaluating how it positions AI-enhanced computing to consumers.
