Senate Republicans on Thursday defeated a Democratic initiative aimed at concluding the United States’ military engagement with Iran, voting down a war powers resolution that had already passed the House. The vote occurred as the conflict surpassed the 200-day threshold and resulted in the deaths of 19 American service members.
The legislation, which secured bipartisan support in the House during the previous week, ultimately failed in the Senate with a tally of 49 in favor and 50 against. Senate Democrats, spearheaded by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senator Andy Kim of New Jersey, invoked the War Powers Resolution to force the procedural vote to the floor.
