Buttler Injury Deny England as Sri Lanka Level Series

Sri Lanka have levelled their one-day international series against England after a dramatic victory at Headingley, courtesy of Kusal Mendis’s century and a resilient chase that saw England collapse in the final overs.

England, chasing a target of 322, were in control until Jos Buttler retired hurt on 67 after aggravating a hamstring issue. The loss of their captain shifted momentum decisively in Sri Lanka’s favour.

Re-emerging with just 27 needed from 14 balls, Buttler was unable to contribute effectively due to the injury. Will Jacks fell for 52 shortly after, leaving England needing 19 runs from the final over with Buttler on strike. Unable to run even a single, Buttler was caught at deep mid-wicket, ending the contest as Sri Lanka won by 16 runs.

Former England captain Harry Brook acknowledged the disappointment but highlighted the fighting spirit shown by his team. “Sri Lanka played exceptionally well there, especially the last 10-15 overs,” Brook said. “Having the opportunity to play in a decider will only benefit us.”

The match featured a standout performance from Sri Lanka’s captain, Kusal Mendis, who scored 121 off 116 balls. His innings included several boundaries and a moment of controversy when he successfully appealed for a caught-behind dismissal on 99, which was overturned. Mendis was eventually run out while attempting to clear the boundary off Rehan Ahmed.

For England, Tom Banton provided early support with a valuable 73, while Ben Duckett contributed 67 before both fell to left-arm spinner Dinuth Wellalage. Despite a strong opening partnership of 143, the middle order failed to capitalize fully, with Joe Root managing only 15 and Brook scoring a duck.

Joshua Tongue struggled for accuracy, conceding 50 runs in seven overs, while Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton took two wickets each but shared the burden of expensive spells. Sri Lanka’s bowling attack, led by Wellalage and Ahmed, restricted England’s lower order in the dying stages.

The series decider is scheduled for Sunday at The Oval, serving as the finale to the international summer for both sides.
