Rising Trend of Adults Under 30 Living at Home May Have Long-Term Financial Consequences

A significant demographic shift is reshaping young adulthood in America: nearly half of all adults under the age of 30 are currently living with their parents. While this arrangement offers immediate relief from housing costs, experts caution that the long-term financial repercussions could persist for decades.

Geoffrey Sanzenbacher, a professor of economics at Boston College and research fellow at the Center for Retirement Research, highlighted the cultural contrast between past and present generations. He noted that millennials grew up with television narratives like “Friends” and “New Girl,” which depicted young adults establishing independent households in their first apartments shortly after turning 20 or 30.

In contrast, newer programming aimed at Generation Z, such as the series “Adults,” reflects the current reality where friends often reside rent-free in a childhood home rather than moving out.

Sanzenbacher suggested that the prevalence of multi-generational living is not coincidental but rather a response to evolving economic conditions. As housing affordability challenges tighten, the family home has effectively become the new “first apartment” for a large portion of young adults.
