Trump and Xi to Hold Summit on Trade, AI in Washington

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are set to hold high-level discussions on Thursday in Washington, focusing on the extension of a trade truce and regulatory approaches to artificial intelligence. The summit will conclude with a state dinner at the White House, where prominent US technology executives are expected to attend, signaling the central role AI will play in the dialogue.

Trump announced the upcoming talks via social media, describing it as a “big day” with President Xi. He highlighted that machine learning would be a primary topic, yet he reiterated his stance that the US should maintain its current regulatory framework. Reflecting comments made at the UN General Assembly earlier in the week, Trump emphasized a desire to keep AI guardrails exactly as they are, pointing to the US Department of Justice as the primary overseer rather than pursuing international cooperative efforts. He asserted that this aligns with China’s position, though Xi is expected to offer his own remarks later.

Speaking through state news agency Xinhua prior to his arrival, Xi called for a shift in the bilateral dynamic, stating that the two nations should act as “partners rather than rivals.” He noted the long-standing friendly exchanges between the peoples of both countries and their deeply intertwined interests, expressing anticipation for “in-depth exchanges” on major bilateral and global issues.

On the economic front, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that Washington and Beijing have agreed to extend their trade truce, known as the Busan Agreement, through January 2. The extension pushes back the original November 10 expiration date, providing additional time for negotiations. Bessent described the move as an economic detente aimed at stabilizing relations between the two largest economies.

Xi’s arrival was marked by a rare planeside welcome at Joint Base Andrews, featuring a red carpet and military flyover—an honor Trump reserved specifically for Xi despite the usual protocol of welcoming leaders at the White House. This marks the third meeting between the two leaders in eleven months and Xi’s first state visit to Washington in a decade.

Beyond trade and technology, the visit is expected to address geopolitical flashpoints, including the wars in Iran and Ukraine, and Taiwan. Reports indicate that Trump plans to raise the case of Hong Kong democracy advocate Jimmy Lai, a British citizen sentenced to 20 years in prison. A White House spokesperson stated that Trump wants to see Lai released and has urged Chinese authorities to grant him humanitarian parole, a position also supported by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Meanwhile, tensions persist regarding press access. The White House had not yet responded to an overnight court order requiring the restoration of entry for CNN, MSNBC, and Politico reporters, as analysts viewed the case for a temporary evaluation.

  1. Wait, Trump wants to keep US AI guardrails exactly as is? That sounds suspiciously like a ‘no new rules’ stance for big tech.
