The European Union officially placed Russian commentator Xenia Fedorova under sanctions on Thursday, a move published in the EU’s Official Journal that follows her recent deportation from France.
Fedorova, who previously served as the head of RT France before the channel was banned in the country in 2022, was expelled in August after losing an appeal against a court order. Authorities stated she had been disseminating pro-Russian narratives and engaging in Kremlin-aligned propaganda activities within France and the broader Union during Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Following her tenure at RT, Fedorova became a commentator for media outlets owned by conservative French billionaire Vincent Bollore, including the CNews channel. She has publicly rejected the accusations against her, labeling them as censorship, and stated she was on holiday outside France when the deportation order took effect.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized the government’s resolve to counter foreign interference, writing online that France and the EU remain committed to thwarting Russia’s destabilizing actions. “Those who think they can carry out hostile actions against our democracy with impunity will face the consequences,” Barrot said.
Fedorova is now subject to the same restrictive measures applied across the 27-nation bloc for her role in promoting pro-Russian agendas.
