Significant concerns regarding a resumption of civil war in Ethiopia have intensified following a military offensive by Tigray rebel forces into the Afar and Amhara regions. The escalation coincides with the establishment of a new rebel coalition explicitly dedicated to toppling the administration of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
The current tensions are being viewed through the lens of the devastating conflict that occurred between 2020 and 2022. During that period, fighting between the Ethiopian national army and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF)—both a political party and a paramilitary group—resulted in approximately 600,000 deaths. As hostilities appear to reignite, both sides are currently exchanging accusations that the other is responsible for triggering the return to open conflict.
