Island Raises $400 Million at $6.4 Billion Valuation Amid Rising AI Cyber Threats

Dallas-based cybersecurity startup Island announced a $400 million funding round that values the company at $6.4 billion, capitalizing on an urgent enterprise demand for protection against autonomous artificial intelligence threats.

The investment, led by Evolution Equity Partners, highlights the growing need for security tools as businesses face increasing risks from rogue AI agents. The funding surge coincides with intense legislative debates in Washington and Silicon Valley regarding AI regulation and potential development slowdowns.

“Every old control is breaking, so everything’s up for grabs,” Mike Fey, Island’s CEO and co-founder, told CNBC. “I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s a very special time.”

Interest in AI-driven defenses has intensified following high-profile incidents, such as the agent-orchestrated attack on Hugging Face by OpenAI’s systems. According to Fey, traditional security measures are no longer sufficient to counter the sophisticated tactics employed by these new digital threats.

Island, which was ranked No. 28 on the CNBC Disruptor 50 list, is known for its enterprise browser solution that enables organizations to monitor and control browsing activity. This capability is critical for hybrid workforces, as browsers remain a primary vector for hackers seeking to exfiltrate sensitive data.

The company plans to deploy the new capital toward research and development and to expand its operations into international markets, including Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Additionally, Fey revealed plans to scale the workforce from 1,000 to 1,500 employees by mid-next year.

Island’s client roster includes major corporations such as Pfizer, Chipotle, American Airlines, and several large financial institutions.

Fey emphasized that the company’s mission is to ensure the future workforce can operate safely and productively within evolving digital environments, even as the competitive landscape in the cybersecurity sector becomes increasingly crowded.

  1. Hugging Face incident was a wake-up call. Maybe Island’s approach to controlling the endpoint is finally what enterprises need.
