During the opening men’s one-day international between South Africa and Australia at the Kingsmead Ground, Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood made an immediate impact in the fourth over. He secured the first wicket by dismissing Tony de Zorzi, contributing to a challenging start for the home side.
At the end of that delivery, South Africa sat on 9 for the loss of one wicket, with Quinton de Kock on 7 and captain Temba Bavuma on 1. Hazlewood nearly celebrated a second breakthrough immediately after, appealing for a large leg-before-wicket decision against Bavuma.
The South African skipper was initially given not out as he defended a straight delivery. Australia opted to review the decision, but replays confirmed that while the ball struck Bavuma’s back pad in front of the stumps, it was bouncing over the wickets, preserving his stance at the crease.
De Zorzi, a left-hand batsman, had earlier found Hazlewood difficult to score off. However, when offered a slight width, he attempted to drive hard. The ball drifted just wide of the off-stump, causing De Zorzi to edge it directly to Matt Renshaw waiting at first slip.
