New data reveals that sales of Chinese hybrid automobiles within the European Union have surged dramatically over the past four and a half years, intensifying worries in Brussels regarding the long-term viability of the region’s automotive sector.
In 2022, only 659 fully hybrid vehicles manufactured in China were sold across the bloc. These vehicles utilize petrol or diesel engines to charge both the motor and battery. However, following the introduction of anti-subsidy tariffs on fully electric cars from China in 2024, the market shifted significantly. By July of this year, sales of Chinese hybrids had climbed to 160,662 units in the first seven months alone.
The rapid growth of imported hybrids, which are currently exempt from the electric vehicle tariffs, highlights a broader trade disparity. The EU currently imports three times more goods from China than it exports to the region, fueling concerns among policymakers and industry leaders about the competitive pressure facing European carmakers.
European manufacturers better innovate or they will lose the market entirely to cheaper imports.
