The United Kingdom is missing out on annual export revenues to the European Union that could total as much as £6.5 billion, according to a latest analysis by the IPPR thinktank. The organization attributes this significant shortfall to the failure to secure a mutual recognition agreement with Brussels, which would allow manufacturers to bypass redundant product testing requirements.
The report indicates that 0.18% of the UK’s national income is being lost due to these regulatory mismatches. In response to the persistent administrative burdens caused by successive governments’ inability to finalize a deal, numerous companies have either withdrawn from the EU market entirely or established subsidiaries within the bloc to maintain access.
Specific sectors have seen substantial projected gains that remain unrealized. Motor vehicle and parts exports are estimated to be between £2.48 billion and £3.42 billion higher each year if rules were aligned. The electronics industry could see an uplift of £1.17 billion to £1.67 billion annually, while pharmaceutical exports are projected to increase by between £740 million and £820 million.
Motor industry losing millions over paperwork? That sounds avoidable if they actually prioritized trade deals over posturing.
It amazes me that businesses still pay for duplicate testing when simple agreements could fix this. The political will just isn’t there.
