A comprehensive new study has identified significant failures in England’s approach to managing hypertension, revealing that the current system is “not fit for purpose.” According to the findings, 59% of individuals with high blood pressure remain undiagnosed, leaving them unaware of their condition while facing elevated risks of stroke, heart attack, and premature death.
The research, described as the largest of its kind to examine this issue, further highlights that among those who do receive treatment from a general practitioner, only 50% have successfully brought their blood pressure under control. This dual crisis of widespread undiagnosed cases and insufficient treatment outcomes underscores an urgent need for reform in how the “silent killer” is addressed within the English healthcare system.
