Harvey Weinstein Sentenced to 15 Years for Sexual Assault in New York

Former Hollywood powerbroker Harvey Weinstein was resentenced to 15 years in prison on Wednesday for the 2006 sexual assault of former production assistant Miriam Haley. The ruling came from a Manhattan court, marking another significant legal milestone for the disgraced producer whose 2017 convictions helped ignite the global #MeToo movement.

Weinstein, now 74 and appearing in a wheelchair, previously received a 23-year sentence for the same crime in 2020. However, that conviction was overturned on appeal in 2024. Following a retrial in 2025, a jury found him guilty once again, leading to the reduced sentence handed down this week.

During the proceedings, prosecutors had requested a 20-year term, but Weinstein’s legal team argued that a longer sentence would likely result in him dying behind bars due to his deteriorating health. His attorneys have cited battles with blood cancer, congestive heart failure, and kidney issues as factors warranting leniency.

While Weinstein expressed remorse during his appearance, he maintained his denial of guilt. “I do have remorse for Miriam Haley’s pain, but I have to reiterate my innocence,” he told the judge. Conversely, Haley emphasized the enduring trauma of the attack, describing it as akin to “a life sentence.” She stated that the assault devastated her sense of security and that coming forward has forced her to live in fear for years to come.

The case centers on allegations that Weinstein forcibly performed oral sex on Haley at his Manhattan apartment in 2006 after she accepted an invitation to visit him. Despite her attempts to reject his advances, prosecutors proved that he ignored her pleas and assaulted her.

This resentencing precedes a separate legal proceeding in California, where Weinstein faces punishment for a 2013 rape and assault accusation involving an actress in a Los Angeles hotel room. In June, an appeals court upheld his conviction in that matter but vacated his original 16-year sentence, prompting a new sentencing hearing.

Meanwhile, authorities have decided against pursuing a fourth trial regarding allegations made by actress Jessica Mann. A New York judge had previously declared a mistrial in May after a jury failed to reach a verdict, marking the third time Mann has testified against Weinstein. She had expressed that she could not endure the process again, citing the emotional toll of previous trials that were also compromised by procedural errors and witness mishandling.
