VfL Wolfsburg announced on Wednesday that they have agreed to terminate midfielder Christian Eriksen’s contract by mutual consent. The decision brings an early conclusion to a deal that was originally scheduled to run through June 2027.
The 34-year-old Danish international had been recovering from a medical scare during a friendly match against Ukraine in June. This incident echoed a pivotal moment in his career during Euro 2020, when he suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark against Finland. Following that collapse, Eriksen underwent a six-month rehabilitation and resumed his career with a pacemaker implanted.
In July, Eriksen expressed his desire to return to Denmark to focus on his rehabilitation. “At the moment, it is important for me to be close to my family in Denmark,” he said at the time. He added that he was pleased the club could find a solution together, noting that his time in Wolfsburg included both highs and lows. He expressed confidence in the club’s current leadership as they strive for promotion back to the top flight.
Eriksen joined the German side as a free agent a year ago. During his tenure, he made 34 appearances across all competitions, contributing three goals and ten assists.
Dieter Hecking, Wolfsburg’s Managing Director of Sport, stated that the club granted Eriksen’s request to end the agreement. “He has already experienced and achieved a great deal during his extraordinary career,” Hecking said. “Despite his short time here, he has left a lasting impression on his teammates, our staff and the fans.”
Besides Wolfsburg, Eriksen has played for Ajax Amsterdam, Tottenham Hotspur, Inter Milan, and Manchester United throughout his professional career.
