Shadrack Sibiya, one of South Africa’s most senior law enforcement officials, has been charged with the rape of an 18-year-old woman and the grooming of a 16-year-old girl. His arrest occurs against a backdrop of national outrage over femicide and widespread allegations of corruption within the country’s police force.
Sibiya, who previously held the position of deputy national police commissioner, was taken into custody on Monday. He had already been suspended from his duties following accusations that he interfered with investigations into political killings.
In addition to the rape charge, Sibiya faces counts of people trafficking, promoting the sexual grooming of a child, and two separate counts of grooming a minor. The case has intensified scrutiny on the South African Police Service, which is currently grappling with accusations that it has failed to adequately address violence against women and girls or root out criminal elements within its ranks.
This isn’t just one bad apple. It reflects a systemic failure to protect women and children.
