Sony Makes PSSR 2.0 the Default Upscaler for PS5 Pro

Sony has updated its PS5 Pro console to make PSSR 2.0 the default upscaling technology for supported games. PSSR is Sony’s machine-learning upscaler designed to render games at lower resolutions and upscale them to higher outputs, enabling developers to achieve superior visuals without the full performance burden of native rendering.

The original PSSR implementation drew criticism during the PS5 Pro launch, with reviewers noting issues such as shimmering textures and distortion around fine text. According to Sony, the improved second generation addresses these problems by offering better detail clarity, more stable image reconstruction during motion, and reduced flickering or afterimages. Developers have reported that the new version provides more refined rendering of complex elements like hair and foliage.

The technology builds upon Project Amethyst, a collaborative graphics research initiative between Sony and AMD that has also contributed to AMD’s machine-learning graphics solutions for personal computers.

While games that support the newer version will automatically use it, owners of older titles that were not built for PSSR 2.0 are not forced to upgrade. Users experiencing unexpected visual artifacts can navigate to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality and disable the override. This allows PSSR 1 games to continue using their original technology. To benefit from the improvements, players must ensure they are running games in Pro or Quality mode.
