NASA Chief Urges Selective Partnerships as Lunar Race Turns to Resource Control

Jared Isaacman, currently in his tenth month leading NASA, emphasized the need for the agency to be more discerning when establishing international partnerships. Speaking at an event near Washington, DC, last week, Isaacman addressed military leaders and defense contractors, noting that the modern competition for the Moon has evolved beyond simple national prestige into a high-stakes contest for extraterrestrial territory and resources.

While the initial space race was often viewed as a battle of ideologies between the United States and China, Isaacman argued that the contemporary stakes are more tangible. He identified a specific area near the lunar south pole as the optimal location for a future Moon base, warning that whoever establishes a presence there first will gain significant advantages.

The strategic importance of this region stems from the presence of substantial water ice deposits. Located within the floors of eternally shadowed craters, this ice is protected from the sublimating effects of direct sunlight. According to Isaacman, this water source is critical for sustaining a permanent lunar settlement, providing essential supplies such as drinking water, breathable air, and rocket fuel. Furthermore, these resources could serve as a crucial staging ground for subsequent missions to Mars.
