Russian Airstrikes Kill Three in Ukraine as Zelenskyy Arrives for UN Summit

Ukrainian officials reported that at least three people were killed and six others wounded following a wave of Russian attacks targeting industrial facilities and critical energy infrastructure across several regions overnight. The strikes left approximately 100,000 residents without electricity in the Chernihiv area.

Oleksandr Hanzha, governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, confirmed on Telegram that the overnight barrage hit industrial sites simultaneously in Dnipro, Pavlohrad, and Kryvyi Rih, which is the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Hanzha noted that missiles, drones, and artillery heavily damaged business and warehouse premises in Dnipro.

Ukraine’s air force stated that Moscow deployed a combined arsenal of 212 drones, four cruise missiles, and an unspecified number of Oniks antiship and ballistic missiles. In the Poltava region, Governor Vitalii Diakivnych described a “massive” attack that struck both an industrial enterprise and a critical infrastructure facility.

The Russian Ministry of Defence confirmed the operations, stating that its forces targeted industrial and military sites, fuel and energy sectors, port infrastructure, and sea vessels supporting the Ukrainian military. In response to Ukrainian aerial activity, Russia’s defence ministry reported that air defence units intercepted and destroyed 297 drones overnight across various regions.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian drone strikes hit Russia’s Samara region along the Volga River, resulting in one fatality and four injuries, according to the regional governor. The area houses strategically significant facilities, including oil refineries.

These assaults coincide with President Zelenskyy’s arrival in New York for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). As nearly 130 heads of state gather, discussions on ending the war are expected to dominate the agenda. Zelenskyy announced via X that a “drone deal” is prepared to enhance air defence capabilities and secure funding for the war effort.

“Ukraine’s number one priority is bringing peace closer and protecting the lives of our people,” Zelenskyy wrote, adding that concrete security proposals and de-escalation measures are being pursued. He outlined plans for around 20 meetings, including engagements with US President Donald Trump, European leaders, members of Congress, and heads of international organizations.

On Monday, Zelenskyy met with French President Emmanuel Macron. The two nations previously agreed to collaborate on securing a moratorium on strikes against energy networks and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, a stance Macron highlighted after his own meeting with President Trump. Both Zelenskyy and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov are scheduled to address the UNGA later this week.
