Fermanagh Fields Rooted in Childhood Aid Edgar-Jones for Sense and Sensibility Role

Actor Daisy Edgar-Jones has revealed that childhood memories of County Fermanagh played a significant part in her preparation for the role of Elinor Dashwood in the new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. Although Edgar-Jones is familiar with Ireland from filming Normal People in 2020, it was the rural landscapes of Fermanagh, where parts of her family reside, that proved most beneficial.

Edgar-Jones, whose mother originates from County Down, described spending her youth exploring open fields in Northern Ireland. “I remember big long summers when I was very young in Fermanagh in the fields which definitely helped with my Sense and Sensibility journey because I was doing a lot of the similar wandering around, with not much to do, under the big sky,” she said during an interview with BBC News NI.

The latest film adaptation, produced by Focus Features and Working Title, features a cast heavily rooted in Irish talent. Caitriona Balfe stars as Mrs. Dashwood, while Fiona Shaw takes on the role of Mrs. Jennings. Additionally, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, known for his role in Hamnet, portrays Margaret Dashwood, the youngest sister.

Balfe, originally from County Monaghan, noted that the production resonated with her own experiences. “There was a lot of that sisterly dynamic that I recognised,” Balfe said. She highlighted the resilience of the Dashwood family, observing that their financial destitution contrasted with the warmth and growth they experienced together at Barton Cottage.

Proud of her heritage, Balfe remarked that Ireland is currently experiencing a vibrant artistic era. She also hinted at the possibility of returning to live in Ireland with her husband in the future, though no plans are currently set.

Sense and Sensibility premiered in cinemas on September 25.
