Officials in Jackson County announced late Monday that a grand jury has determined no criminal charges should be brought regarding the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells. According to the grand jury report, the evidence reviewed by the panel did not support filing charges at this time.
The report stated that the position, condition, time of discovery, and location of Wells’ body, found off the coast of Mississippi in July, were consistent with drowning. Wells disappeared after celebrating the Fourth of July holiday on barrier islands along the Gulf Coast with friends. His body was recovered two days later from waters near Horn Island.
Authorities had previously expressed belief that the college football player drowned, but sought a formal determination from the grand jury. The panel reviewed all case materials, including the completed state medical examiner’s autopsy report, to decide whether a crime had been committed.
