On Saturday, renewable energy sources achieved a historic milestone on Australia’s primary electricity network, satisfying 80.4% of total power demand. The record surge was driven by abundant sunshine and strong winds across the country.
For approximately 30 minutes around midday, rooftop solar installations alone generated more than 50% of the electricity consumed within the national electricity market. This extensive solar coverage, which spans the eastern states, South Australia, and the Australian Capital Territory, was bolstered by contributions from large-scale solar farms, wind facilities, and a modest 1% share from hydroelectric plants.
The remaining 20% of power requirements were fulfilled by fossil fuel sources, specifically coal and natural gas. The event highlights the increasing capacity of Australia’s renewable energy infrastructure to meet significant portions of the national grid’s load under favorable weather conditions.
