Handsworth Baby Bank Sees Rise in Working Families Seeking Support

A charitable baby bank in Birmingham is reporting a significant shift in the demographics of those it assists, with more parents working full-time roles turning to the service due to rising living costs. Kavita Kaur Dhillon and her husband Karvinder operate the Handsworth Baby and Family Bank, located within their boutique on Soho Road. Since opening its doors in 2024, the initiative has provided essential items such as nappies, baby formula, clothing, and toys at no cost.

While the couple noted that initial demand primarily came from low-income households, they have observed a growing number of working families seeking assistance with daily expenses. Kavita highlighted that the need has expanded beyond clothing to critical supplies. “We don’t need any more clothing, it’s the everyday essentials, formula, nappies, wipes, toiletries,” she explained.

Karvinder Dhillon pointed out that inflation has broadened the scope of support required. He recalled that previously, the bank mostly needed to stock nappies, but now the increasing cost of living means families require help with a wider array of day-to-day necessities. The couple emphasized that they are currently facing shortages, particularly of baby formula, often finding themselves with only a few tubs remaining in stock.

Kavita stressed the importance of dispelling misconceptions about who receives aid. “Just because you dress nice, or drive a nice car, doesn’t mean you don’t need help. Nobody knows people’s circumstances. People can judge, but the reality is people are struggling,” she said.

The decision to house the bank inside the Dhillons Boutique store was intentional, aimed at reducing the stigma often associated with seeking charitable support. Kavita explained that customers can enter the shop and leave without appearing to have received handouts. “You go out of our shop and people think you have purchased something, but in fact you’ve just used our baby bank,” she said, describing the environment as warm and welcoming.

Reflecting on the project’s impact, Kavita described the work as deeply fulfilling. “For me it is fulfilling, knowing I’ve been able to support or help someone else be okay and smile,” she shared. She urged anyone facing financial hardship to reach out, adding, “It’s nothing to be ashamed of or to be scared of. There’s no shame in asking for help.”
