Media professionals across the United States are navigating an increasingly hostile environment for press freedom, with reports emerging that some journalists have been detained and even deported as a result of the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration enforcement operations.
The situation intensified recently in Minneapolis, where hundreds of masked and armed federal agents surrounded the streets, transforming the midwestern city into a focal point of the government’s unprecedented crackdown on immigration. During one of the daily protests that emerged in response, independent photographer John Abernathy was documenting the scene when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents intervened and tackled him.
A photograph taken during the incident shows Abernathy on the ground with pepper spray running down his face. The image captures the severity with which ICE agents have been treating both immigrants and the thousands of U.S. citizens who have gathered to defend them.
