International designers converged on Wellington, New Zealand, for the annual World of WearableArt festival, an event where fashion, theater, design, and fine art intersect. The competition showcases imaginative creations ranging from avian and ichthyological gowns to surreal garments drawing from cultural heritage and the natural environment.
Kayla Christensen, a New Zealand-based artist, secured the year’s highest honor, the Supreme Wow award. Her winning entry, titled ‘Sacred Nightfall,’ is a meticulously stitched tapestry that evokes a night goddess emerging from the native forests of Aotearoa.
Ichthyological gowns still crack me up, but this one feels more serious and profound.
